Ablaze

I recently heard the phrase
‘I won’t set myself on fire,
to keep you warm’
And it made me reflect on past mistakes
and how we so easily give ourselves away
you should never have to compromise who you are
or what you believe in
to entertain who ever loves you need is
and so many times society
strikes a match against our flesh
and they let it consume as they laugh
because they want nothing more
than to see your ashes spread.
because people are cruel
and its not until you start to make a difference
that people start noticing you
and them testing and defying your every move
to see what you’ll do
is more of a compliment then them being passive
because then you know you’re burning with passion
and their matches only added to it
But when its someone you love
and they hand you the match
and expect you to torch what
you stand for to become more attached
That’s when your heart is torn
between knowing what true love is
and what should be
but compromising because he or she
could be the best you’ll ever meet
even though their perspective
is contorted and their morals weak
and when the flame starts spreading
you realize you can’t
recognize yourself or your
relationship through the smoke and the haze
but the fumes make you delusional
and the heat makes you dazed
and there is a difference
between selfishness and beliefs
sometimes being selfless
means defeat to everything you believe
and I’ve found that standing your ground
is a lot more rewarding that being thrown around
so sometimes you just have to walk out of the bonfire
composed of their past lovers quenched
desire to keep their darling warm
and now a year or two passed
and you’re strangers with feelings
not good and not bad, but passive
maybe because the fire you did lite
damaged your nervous system
and now your pain receptors refuse
to acknowledge the fight
of the feelings that scorched a piece of you
you can never get back
that was left in the collection of ashes
that your past lover still has.
