Trade My Dreams for Insomnia

L.C. McQuillen

My body shifts
Every few minutes
As my mind incessantly
Stirs the irony
Of my upcoming reality

You’ve been asleep for hours
And haven’t noticed my soft
Touch, followed by a
quiet withdraw
lingering feelings that send
Me into deep thought
In a dark room
Hot, with the fan on

Hot with your rhythmic
Breathe on my neck
And I wish I could freeze time
But instead I turn my body
Face down; Down
Soaking in welled up tears

Disdain for the wit of life
Somewhere I finally want to stay
My nomadic tendencies fade
In your arms I feel safe
In this bed I lose my strength
And reach for you again

I exchange dreams for insomnia
So I can soak in these long
Soon to end, precious,
Over examined nights
Love divided by international boarders
Paying the dues of past mistakes

I can hear the drip of melting snow
Conflicted by the sound of it
In the dead of winter
you’ve kept me warm
But in spring
I’ll need my dreams back.
